Raymond McLaughlin's (sigh) blog page. Welcome to my (sigh) blog page.I sigh because, now that everybody and their brother's dog's deer tick, has a blog I guess I'll start one too. I sigh because so many blogs are irritating, stream of banality abominations, combining petty vanity with the presumption that anyone is interested in what the writer had for dinner. (Ok, I might be interested if is was something unusual.) On the other hand some blogs are more like thoughtful, well written newspaper columns. Among the columnists I've admired were: Sydney J. Harris, Mike Royko, Linda Ellerbee, Leonard Pitts Jr., and Dave Berry. I wish I could write as well as any of them. From time to time I manage to write something that seems worth keeping around, if only for my own future reference. I thereby sidestep the question of whether any one else would be interested in what I have to say. September 30, 2009 -- No GNUs Can Still Be Good News It was response to a series of emails from the Free Software Foundation that precipitated my decision to take this thing "live". At my president@mdlug.org address I received an invitation from an intern at the FSF to list our LUG on their wiki. This was followed a couple of days later by a notice that the offer was an error, because our organization's name contained the word Linux but did not include the word GNU. This inspired me to respond, which I attempted to do as politely and thoughtfully as I could. October 4, 2009 -- Book review: I Lorelei - A novel by Yeardley Smith I have long been a big fan of the Simpsons Television program, and especially that beautiful, sexy, talented, thoughtful, gracious, and terribly underappreciated Yeardley Smith. This summer I became aware that Ms Smith had written a "children's" book I Lorelei. (It had actually been released in January, some fan I am, huh?) I immediately got a copy and read it. After some musing I decided that I liked it enough to try to write a review, and here it is. |
